Respiratory and circulatory responses of rainbow trout larvae to carbon monoxide and to hypoxia.

چکیده

The purpose of this investigation was to explore the ontogeny of certain respiratory responses of rainbow trout. Adult trout respond to hypoxia with an increase in the flow of water over the respiratory surfaces, and with a reflex bradycardia (Holeton & Randall, 1967). When adult rainbow trout are exposed to 5% carbon monoxide (CO) and thus rendered anoxaemic while at the same time their arterial blood and the environmental water are at a high POj, they do not show the reflex bradycardia. In fact their heart rate increases considerably (Holeton, 1971). One possible interpretation of the differences in the response of the hypoxic adult compared with the CO-poisoned fish is that the response to CO is the basic response to anoxaemia, and that the response to hypoxia is the same but with the bradycardia reflex superimposed upon this. By examining the responses to hypoxia and to CO by larval trout, it was hoped that a temporal or ontogenetic separation in the development of responses would indicate whether more than one set of responses was involved, and if so, which was the more ' primitive' or basic. The use of CO on newly hatched trout presupposes that haemoglobin blockage will have some effect, and therefore that the haemoglobin in the larval fish is serving an oxygen transport function. The hazard of tissue metabolism interference by 5 % CO was investigated by Holeton (1971) and discounted. Thus if the respiration of the larval fish is affected by CO, then it is reasonable to assume that their haemoglobin is serving a respiratory function. An investigation such as the present one is greatly facilitated by the transparency of the newly hatched trout. The breathing movements and circulatory dynamics can be observed visually without disturbance to the fish.

EFFECTS OF HYPOXIC HYPOXIA AND CARBON MONOXIDE-INDUCED HYPOXIA ON THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM AND REGIONAL BLOOD FLOW OF THE ANESTHETIZED CAT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential responses of the cardiovascular system and regional blood flow to hypoxic hypoxia (BB) and to carbon monoxide (CO)-induced hypoxia (COH). Ten anesthetized cats were studied under two nonnoxic (control: CONT) and two hypoxic conditions. Four types of radioactive micro spheres were used to measure regional blood flow during CONT an...

Effects of dietary replacement of fishmeal by yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) larvae meal on growth performance, hematological indices and some of non-specific immune responses of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

8-week feeding trial was conducted for juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to determine the optimal amount of Tenebrio molitor meal (TM) that could replace fishmeal in feeds without reducing growth performance, hematological indices and non-specific immune responses. Five isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated with TM replacing 0% (Control), 25% (TM25), 50% (TM50), 75% (TM...

Humoral and non-specific immune responses in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) naturally exposed to and immunized with Streptococcus iniae

In this study, immune responses against Streptococcus iniae infections in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were analyzed. Anti-streptococcal antibody (ASA) levels, respiratory burst activity (RBA), phagocytic activity (PA) and phagocytic index (P index) were measured in kidney macrophages. Fish were allocated to three experimental groups (n = 50 per group): survivors of natural S. iniae inf...

Enrichment of Artemia nauplii with essential fatty acids and vitamin C: effect on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) larvae performance

The effect of essential fatty acids (EFA) and vitamin C-enriched Artemia nauplii on growth, survival, and resistance to temperature (high) stress in rainbow trout larvae reared in tanks were investigated. The larvae (average weight 120.43mg±13.5) were fed 6 times daily starting at the onset of exogenous feeding for 1 week. Triplicate groups of fish were offered one of four treatments (1) commer...
